Leader:  The Lord be with you.

People:  And with you also.

Leader:  The Lord’s name shall endure for ever:

People:   The Lord’s name shall be continued as long as the sun:

Leader:  And we shall be blessed in him:

People:  All nations shall call him blessed.

Opening Prayer

Prayer of Confession (in unison)

I, poor sinner, confess to thee, O Almighty, eternal, merciful God and Father, that I have sinned in manifold ways against thee and thy commandments.

I confess that I have taken thy holy Name in vain.  Or, I have heard others take thy name in vain and said nothing.  Or, I have sworn lightly, using other words and thought that was not the same.  I have failed to realize that I slander thy holy name whenever my life, my words, my deeds are not in accord with thy holy word and law.

Wherefore I beseech thee, O heavenly Father, that, thou wouldst graciously forgive me these and all my sins.  Keep and preserve me henceforth that I may walk only in thy way and live according to thy will; and all of this through Jesus Christ, thy dear Son, our Savior.  Amen.

(Derived from Martin Bucer 1539)

Declaration of Forgiveness

Leader:  The saying is sure and worthy of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners (I Tim. 1:15).

People:  He himself bore our sins in his body on the cross, so that, free from sins, we might live for righteousness; by his wounds you have been healed (I Peter 2:24).

and live according to thy will; and all of this through Jesus Christ, thy dear Son, our Savior.  Amen.
