Call to Worship (Joel 2:28)

Leader: And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh;

People: And your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions:

Opening Prayer

Prayer of Confession (in unison)

Almighty, eternal God and Father,

we confess and acknowledge unto thee that we were conceived in unrighteousness and are full of sin and transgression in all our life.

We do not fully believe thy word nor follow thy holy commandments.

Remember thy goodness, we beseech thee, and for thy name's sake be gracious unto us, and forgive us our iniquity. This we pray in the name of the only-begotten Son, Amen.

[Martin Bucer 1539]

Declaration of Forgiveness

Leader: The saying is sure and worthy of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners (I Timothy 1:15).

People: He himself bore our sins in his body on the cross, so that, free from sins, we might live for righteousness; by his wounds you have been healed (I Peter 2:24).

Today is Pentecost, the birthday of the Church. Welcome and happy birthday, Church. May the Holy Spirit who filled the first believers with power and joy rest upon us this day. May God grant us the spiritual gifts we need to serve Him to the best of our ability.

Today Hospice is commissioning Carroll Moore and Lana Rossy as Watchman Representatives for our congregation. We thank Lana and Carroll for their willingness to undertake this important task.

Betty Adkins is in Mary Black Hospital recovering from hip surgery. Please remember Betty and all our sick and shut-ins in your prayers.

Nell Norris' brother, Dr. Phillip Shillinglaw, died May 9, 2002. A graveside service was held Monday, May 13, at Rose Hill Cemetery. Please remember the family in your prayers.

Session meets tonight, 7:00 p.m.

Wednesday Bible Study: 10:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m.

A watchman is a leader in a congregation of people. The book of Isaiah says that being a watchman is a calIing. Watchmen lift up their voices to build up and prepare the way for the people. A watchman may give warning or bring awareness to the congregation. A watchman is willing to have a vision and carry out a purpose. A watchman exhibits faithfulness, persistence, and leads by example. A watchman has a spirit of compassion and concern to bring a peaceful way of living to people.
