The Light

February 2007

Lord Jesus, you said,: "I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life" (John 8:12).

God is light, and you, Lord Jesus, are the image of invisible God; you are God of gods, you are Light of lights.  At your birth, the prophet foretold that you would be a light to enlighten the Gentiles (Luke 2:32), and so your light even then reached beyond one people to all peoples and places.

The visible light of the world is the sun, and you, Lord Jesus, are the Sun of righteousness.  One sun enlightens the whole planet, so does one Christ, and we need no more.

Lord Jesus, you are most excellent and glorious.  You are the fountain of light for all people.  Without the sun, planet earth would be a cold, dead husk.  Without you, Lord Jesus, we are but cold dead husks.

But you promised us, Lord that if we follow you, as the lost traveler follows light on a dark night, we shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.  Thus we seek your guidance and follow in the way that leads to happiness. Many follow false lights that lead them to destruction; but you, O Lord, are the true light.

It is not enough for us to look at this light, but we must follow it, believe in it, and walk in it.  To walk any other way is to walk in darkness.  In you, Lord, we have the light of life.  We have that knowledge and enjoyment of God which is the light of spiritual life in this world and of everlasting life in the other world, where there is no death nor darkness.

Thus, we can all sing the old Hank Williams Sr. song:

I saw the light, I saw the light

No more darkness, no more night

Now I’m so happy, no sorrow in sight

Praise the lord, I saw the light.
