Concerns of the Church

Call to Worship (Philippians 4:4-5)

Leader: Rejoice in the Lord always;

People: Again I will say, Rejoice.

Leader: Let your gentleness be known to everyone.

People: The Lord is near.

Lighting of the Advent Candle

Prayer of Confession (in unison)

Merciful God, by the dawning light of your Messiah, we are reminded of our sins. In this season of preparation for your coming, we are more concerned about preparing for the relatives' coming. At this time of celebration of your gifts, we are consumed with the giving and receiving of baubles. We confess that some of the gifts we give come from selfish motives, and so are not true gifts at all. Sometimes we give to make others obligated to us. Sometimes we give in order to buy favor or impose guilt. Sometimes we give to make ourselves look good. We give extravagantly to those who already have too much, and ignore the urgent needs of those who have nothing.

Forgive our addiction to material goods. Create in us generous hearts, that our giving and receiving may be a sign of your love. In the name of Jesus our Savior, Amen.

Declaration of Forgiveness

Leader: Who is to condemn? It is Christ Jesus, who died, yes, who was raised, who is at the right hand of God, who indeed intercedes for us. (Rom 8:34)

People: So if anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation: everything old has passed away; see, everything has become new! (II Cor. 5:17)
